If you’re like me, you love books and you love language, so hopefully we’ll be spending a great deal of time together doing what we love.

I think if there’s one word that best describes me, it would be ‘storyteller’.  I grew up in a household that provided the perfect incubator for a creative mind.  My mother stressed the importance of books, art, and music, and learning about the world through travel. My father was a gifted and extremely witty teller of tales who held audiences captive whenever he began a story. That combination is what instilled within me the heart of a writer.  From a very early age, I have always wanted to put my thoughts and recollections down on paper, and share with others how I view the world.

Usually my purpose, whether it’s through books,  movies, or songs that I’ve written, is to entertain. Sometimes it’s to educate, and very often it’s just to help me understand and interpret the world around me in my own mind.

The two aspects I love most about writing are the research that goes into each novel, and creating the characters who will live in the story I’m telling.  Even though my stories are fiction, I try to make the world I’ve created as authentic as possible, often weaving in real places and real people from history into the storylines.  

Once I’ve created that setting, I try to inhabit it with richly drawn characters that I hope will evoke some reaction from my readers.  I get to invent these people from whole cloth, deciding how they look, how they talk, what they eat and drink, what are their strengths and foibles, and how they solve problems. You may love some of these characters I create, you may despise some of them, you may admire or pity some of them, but hopefully you will feel some connection to them on an emotional level.  My intention is to make you care what happens to these people I’ve created as much as I do.  Robert Frost said “no tears in the writer, no tears in the reader”, and that’s my goal every time I sit down to write.
